What makes a good wedding hashtag

  • Easy to spell. Guests will type it on their phones after a few drinks, so avoid unusual spellings.
  • Easy to read. Capitalize each word, as the generator does, so #JessAndTomSayIDo isn't read as something else.
  • Unique to you. Search for it on Instagram and TikTok first. If it's taken, add the year, your initials or the place.
  • Short enough for a sign. Most good hashtags are under about 25 letters.

Capitalizing each word doesn't change the hashtag itself, so guests who type it in lower case will still find your photos.

Using it on the day

Put the hashtag on your wedding website and invitations so people know it before the day. On the day, a small sign at the entrance and a card on each table works better than relying on people to remember it. Afterwards, search for it to find guests' photos and videos, which often show moments the photographer missed.

Some couples also put it at the end of a toast or on the back of the program. If you're writing one, our wedding toasts guide has the order and etiquette, and the speech timer tells you how long it runs.

Common questions

How do I make a wedding hashtag?

Combine your first names with your married surname, the year or the place you're getting married. Type them into the generator above and it will suggest ideas you can copy.

How do I check if a wedding hashtag is taken?

Search for it on Instagram and TikTok before you use it. If other couples have used it, add the year, your initials or the place to make it your own.

Should a wedding hashtag include the year?

Adding the year makes it much more likely to be unique, especially if your names are common. It also makes it easy to find the photos again on your anniversary.

Where should we put our wedding hashtag?

On your wedding website, the save-the-dates or invitations, a sign at the reception and the tables. Some couples ask the DJ or emcee to mention it once during the evening.
